B. Lee Roberts - Research Interests:

  1. The search for a permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron at the Spallation Neutron Source in Oak Ridge.

  2. Muon (g-2):  I was co-spokesman with Vernon Hughes for E821 at the Brookhaven AGS. Spires lists over 1400 citations to our physics papers from E821.

  3. MuLan:  The muon lifetime experiment at the Paul Scherrer Insitut.  We have recently reported an 11 ppm measurment of the muon lifetime, a midpoint in our effort to measure the muon lifetime to 1 ppm, and the weak coupling (Fermi) constant Gm to ~0.5 ppm.

 

Past Research:

  1. The CPLEAR Experiment at CERN.  We used proton-antiproton annihilation to produce the strong eigenstates of the K0 meson at t = 0, and studied the CP-violating decays as a function of proper time (the technique later used at the B-factories with B-mesons).  We made the first direct observation of time-reversal violation by measuring the rates for the K-zero to K-zero-bar transition, and for K-zero-bar to K-zero. 

  2. Radiative kaon capture and Hyperon Decays - E811 at Brookhaven.  The radiative capture of a kaon at rest on a proton was measured to gain information on the structure of the  L(1405) resonance, which is below threshold in the K-p system. Also the weak radiative decays,  L n g, and S+ p g were studied.
